Are karrikins one of the magic ingredients in biochar and wood vinegar?

New research is highlighting the role that karrikins play in seed germination and plant growth after fire.

Karrikins are a family of compounds produced by wildfires that can stimulate the germination of dormant seeds of plants from numerous families. They are found in biochar and wood vinegar. Even seeds of horticultural plants such as lettuce and tomato can have improved germination in response to karrikins. It seems that plants have not only learned to live with fire but in some instances to thrive in the aftermath of fire.
