Biochar & Climate Change

Fossil fuels add more carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gasses to the air and thus exacerbate global warming. They are carbon positive. They are adding carbon into the atmosphere that has been trapped in the earth for millennia.

When plants grow, they absorb carbon from the atmosphere by a process known as photosynthesis. However, when they come to the end of their life, this organic carbon is often broken down by microbes in the soil and the carbon is returned back into the atmosphere.

How Biochar mitigates Climate Change

When biochar is produced, it turns this carbon into a more stable inorganic form that is not as easily broken down by bacteria and fungi. What this means is that when biochar is produced, carbon is prevented from entering back into the atmosphere, and the biochar can be stable in the soil for hundreds if not thousands of years.

According to one prominent study widespread sustainable biochar implementation could offset as much as 12% of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on an annual basis. That is a significant contribution! See this link for further information about climate change and Biochar.

Biochar production is therefore a carbon negative technology, sucking carbon out of the atmosphere and storing it in the soil – helping mitigate greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere and combatting climate change. It provides you with a way to play your part in the fight against climate change and aid the push towards a more sustainable economy, which we at Green Man Char are helping to create.
